annmarie-- It is a wooden marble tower. Each color is a different size, and as the marbles travel down in a spiral, each piece of wood resonates with a different harmonic. Goes from high pitch at top down to low at the bottom. Different sized marbles also make a different pitch, so many different sized marbles going down at the same time sounds almost like a percussive rain stick, if that makes sense!
The boys love it to put marbles down - but it also becomes a tree, or mountain, or gnome fort when they play. :)
