Experimenting...

We have been playing with color and texture lately, experimenting with fruits, vegetables and herbs to see what we can create. Last week we tried to make 'paint' using herbs and vegetables.

We collected things that the boys thought would make good color. Coffee grounds for brown, parsley and dill from the garden for green, beets for pink, and cherries for red. The boys chopped, strained, and ground up different ingredients to try. When done, they tried to paint with the liquids to see what worked, what didn't, and how it looked.

Today was about texture. The boys selected items from our garden basket and pantry. The chose a cucumber, apple, 2 types of pepper, lettuce, and a beet. We sliced each thing and the boys then dipped or brushed each item with paint and then stamped.

They started by just seeing what shapes were created, and then later made specific shapes and images by combining the stamping. Fun!

We have some more projects planned in this theme - the boys want to try to dye fabric using something from our garden, and we plan to do some rubbings using leaves and other found items from our yard as well. Should be fun!

Looks like a lot of fun. I can't wait to see what colours you get out of your garden.

You guys look so busy already, and we're just warming up over here!
I really like the transparency of the colors in the flowers- very nice!

Veggie prints are always a lot of fun! Grandmother used to get mad at us when we'd use up her potatoes to "paint" with. :)

Don't forget about a leaf color collection this fall!

That's an excellent idea. My kids would love making their own "paints"...any excuse to mix, smash, chop, etc...and they're happy.

Beautiful work! We had a lot of fun gathering berries last year to make paints. We also made huz an apron and decorated it using veggie stamps. It really came out so cute! And it was guy-ish enough for dad!

I have to admit that I sort of miss doing these sorts of projects with X. They grow up too, too fast.

Wow! What a great idea! I thought you'd have to go to a lot more trouble, boiling water or something, to get something to paint with out of a vegetable! We will definitely try this! Do you think the final paintings will grow mold over time? Although, I'm sure the kids would think that was really cool to watch too!
