apple time.

With the changing leaves comes apple time! We make applesauce, apple butter, apple pie filling, dried apple rings, have lots to juice, do apple crafts, and generally over do it every September. Loads of fun!

Today the boys made applesauce. They peeled (using our hand dandy peeler/corer) apples, measured the juice and maple syrup, sprinkled cinnamon, and grated nutmeg. I love kids in the kitchen. I just read the recipe and did the stove-top work - put it on the stove, let it simmer, and put it in glass jars when ready!

This applesauce recipe is a good one. Tastes like fall. To get the recipe visit my food blog - cook.eat.think.

Yum! I can't wait to pop over to your other blog and dive into the recipe! Nothing like MOM to get us going with apples!

We have that same apple peeler/corer...it's probably the favorite kitchen tool in the house as far as my kids are concerned. They like to eat the peels and call them "apple snakes".

We're doing the apple thing the last few days as well.
Apple sauce and apple pie. Brian insists I make a dozen or so every fall. :)

Great to see you guys on Monday. Would love to get together soon and talk about these amazing articles!

I'm making apple sauce just about every day right now, determined to not let all the apples we picked go bad. Where did you find a peeler with a clamp? I had one with a suction cup and got rid of it. I've been on the lookout for a clamped one for years!

Applesauce looks yummy- I can't seem to locate my food mill, or I would make up a batch myself.
Owen and I are going to try apple crescents this week!

I must say, if I invested in an apple corer/peeler ... the earth would shift a little more on its axis and there'd be a whole lot of apple recipes happening in my kitchen.

Hi!

That looks absolutely delicious. Yum!

I have two questions for you. One, where do you buy your apples? Is there an organic orchard locally that you like?

And, two, a few posts back you mentioned your home schooling group. I've been very interested in the outings your group takes. How can I join, and what age children are in the group? I have a pre-schooler.

Thanks so much! I adore your blog. It provides us with so many good ideas. Thanks!

That looks delish! I love anything apple! We have the same peeler at the preschool where I work. The children love using it!

Kat-Definitely! :)

Jodi - If we didn't have the peeler/corer we wouldn't make so much - it speeds it up a lot!

sarah - We found ours at a local Ace (had a canning section).

Gwen - I thought of you and the pencil sharpener as they excitedly cranked the peeler...definitely satisfies that same need! ;)

anonymous - Don't see an email/profile to reply to, so will post here. :) The group I have referred to is a small homeschool group I started with families I met from Moms in Madison. I am forming an Earth Scouts "troop" for us to channel some of those outings and projects into as a group. If you are interested in knowing more, email me at scorch_dc@yahoo.com and we can chat.

It's my favorite part of fall. Our apple trees are 4 years old and have apples for the first time this year - we are so excited!

Glad to be reading your blog again after my long absence:)

I have been wondering if I should get one of those apple peelers or not. We have so many apple trees around the farm, but I seem to be the only one who wants to pick, peel, slice, cook...maybe a little tool like this will inspire helpers.

We invested in one of those apple peelers this year and I'm taking it back. Maybe it's operator error, but it was way faster and more efficient for me to peel them and Jeff to core them the old way. We just couldn't seem to adjust it so that it would take all the peel. Or if it did, it took half the apple with it. Hhmmmm...
My apple butter is on the stove now. Your sauce looks yummy.
