our wee little robins.

Sad news today. A went into the yard just ahead of me this afternoon and found a dead baby robin out in the middle of the grass. We checked the nest and it is empty - and no wee robins in the bushes either (they were a bit young still to have jumped the nest). The parent birds were running back and forth on the roof, loudly crying - we must have just missed whatever happened. We buried the chick and the boys each said a few words. Sad boys.

  9. Unfortunately, my first thought is my favorite bird... crows.

I watched them work over a nest high in a pine tree outside my window yesterday. Once, a few years back, Paige saw more than a dozen robins flock around a pair of crows on the ground that held a baby robin.

All that aside, my thoughts are with your boys. I hope that they see some young robins flitting about soon to give them some hope and a happy ending. xo

  10. Jodi - That is my first thought too. I know crows love little robins. It is just so odd - we hear crows here, but I have never seen one near our yard in 5 years. Our yard is so small, and that arbor is so packed with orange blossoms...I have no idea how a crow could get into the spot they had the nest. Although crows are amazingly smart, so I'm sure they could figure it out. I am very curious about what it was though!

  14. Catching up because I didn't respond the other day when it happened.
    I'm so sorry!
It's strange when that happens - the babes are sad, but then mine are always philosophers, too, and always saying things like "Well, that's how it is in Nature..."
    :( Still hard and sad.

  15. Your pictures of the nest, eggs and tiny robins have been so beautiful. I hope the boys and you are not too sad, and that you can solve the mystery of what happened. What an amazing learning experience for them.
